Our Training Approach: Science Based & Fear-Free
At K9 Dog Training Academy, our approach is grounded in modern, science-based, fear-free methods. Bec is qualified in canine psychology, behaviour, training, and nutrition, allowing us to support both puppies and pet parents with evidence-based guidance.
We use Positive Reinforcement and Do No Harm principles across all programs. This means we focus on rewarding desirable behaviour, building confidence, and strengthening communication between you and your dog. We do not use coercive, punitive, or aversive tools or methods. Our aim is to create a safe, supportive learning environment where every puppy – and every human – can succeed.
Hierarchy of Dog’s Needs
What It Is
A layered model inspired by Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, adapted specifically for dogs. It outlines the foundational needs that must be met before higher-level learning or training can take place.
Why It Works
By ensuring a puppy’s basic physical, emotional, and social needs are supported, we reduce stress, prevent behavioural issues, and create an environment where learning can flourish.
How It Works
Each week in our programs, we explore one or more levels of the hierarchy, including:
Biological Needs
Nutrition, hydration, sleep, breed-specific needs, gut health, and veterinary care.
Emotional Safety
Creating secure attachments, building confidence, reducing fear, and providing predictable routines.
Social Needs
Healthy dog-dog and dog-human interactions, appropriate play, cooperative care.
Enrichment Needs
Sensory experiences, mental stimulation, species-appropriate outlets, problem-solving tasks.
Training & Skill Development
Cues, manners, boundaries, communication, independence-building.
Fulfilment & Purpose
Allowing dogs to practise natural behaviours in safe, structured ways.
